The BBQ hut, looking across the lake
— After the park visit
What the children do once the rides close?
The park shuts in the late afternoon, and that is usually when families discover the point of staying here. There is a spring-fed lake you can swim in, with kayaks, swans and ducks that are entirely used to company.
There is a trampoline and a games area with table tennis, table football and skittles. And there is the BBQ hut — a covered shelter with a fire pit, a log burner, rocking chairs and blankets, looking out across the water. Guests book it for birthdays and cook pizzas in the oven.
Thirty acres of woodland, meadow and canal frontage sit around all of it, and you are welcome to explore the paths.

Same postcode district as the resort, but on the far side of the Churnet Valley — so you get the countryside rather than the queueing traffic.
— How it tends to go
A day here, roughly
Not a schedule, just the shape most families settle into. Park opening times vary by season, so check before you set the alarm.
Breakfast in the cottage
Eat your own food at your own pace, which with small children is worth more than an extra hour in bed.
Leave about an hour ahead
The drive is ten to fifteen minutes. The car park queue and the walk to the gates are not. The first hour in the park has the shortest queues of the day.
Decide whether to come back
Some families return for a couple of hours, swim, then go back for the evening. Others stop for the day. Being five miles away is what makes that a real choice.
The lake, then the BBQ hut
Kayaks while it is light, then the fire pit and the log burner. It is covered, so rain is not a reason to cancel.
Nothing at all
No corridors, no lifts, no traffic. This is the part guests mention most.
Getting to the park
Four things worth knowing before you drive over
Do not follow it blindly
Sat navs have a habit of routing visitors down Wootton Lane, which is extremely narrow and unsuitable for most vehicles. Once you are close, follow the brown tourist signs instead. Coming back to us, use what3words ///swaps.coping.resolves, which lands on our driveway.
Book it online in advance
Parking at the resort is charged separately from your ticket, and express parking nearer the entrance costs more. Booking ahead online is cheaper than paying at the gate and guarantees a space in school holidays.
Leave about an hour before opening
The drive takes ten to fifteen minutes, but the queue into the car park and the walk to the gates do not. Being early is worth more at Alton Towers than almost anywhere else.
Buy before you travel
Advance online tickets are consistently cheaper than gate prices, and some dates sell out. Check opening dates too — the park closes for part of the winter, though we are open all year.

The other days
What to do with the rest of the week
Most families book more nights than they book park days. These are all within easy reach.
Churnet Valley Railway
Steam trains run from Froghall station, a short walk from the cottages. Guests rate the round trip to Consall and Kingsley highly, and the volunteer guards are happy to talk about the line’s industrial history.
Hetty’s Teashop
Directly across the road. Breakfast, cakes and lunches. The single most mentioned thing in our guest reviews after the lake.
Peak Wildlife Park
A family zoo with walk-through enclosures, well suited to younger children who found the rollercoasters a bit much.
Dimmingsdale and the canal
Woodland walks at Dimmingsdale, and the towpath along the Caldon Canal to the Black Lion at Consall Forge, which you can reach on foot from the cottages.
The Peak District
Dovedale, the Manifold Track and Thor’s Cave are all inside half an hour. We are on the quiet Staffordshire side of the national park.
Straight from us
Book direct and talk to a person
We are Alison and Clive. We live on site, we answer the phone, and there is no booking platform in between.

No booking fees
You pay us, not a platform, so nothing is added on top at checkout.
Local knowledge
We know the area
Which walk suits your dog, which pub does a proper Sunday lunch, when the steam train runs.

Common Questions Answers
How far is Foxtwood from Alton Towers?
About 5 miles by road, which takes ten to fifteen minutes in normal conditions. We are ST10 2HJ and the resort is ST10 4DB — the same postcode district, on opposite sides of the Churnet Valley.
Is it cheaper than staying at an Alton Towers hotel?
The bigger saving for most families is self-catering: breakfast and dinner at supermarket prices rather than resort prices, across several days.
Can we leave things at the cottage and come back mid-day?
Yes. The drive is short enough that families with young children often go back for a couple of hours in the afternoon and return to the park for the evening, or simply stop for the day and use the lake instead.
Can we bring our dog if we are going to the theme park?
Dogs are welcome in the cottages but cannot enter the theme park.
Do you have cottages that link together for two families?
Yes. Bottom Cottage and Seventh Heaven connect through an internal door, and other cottages sit side by side so groups can take several at once. Across all seven we sleep up to 32.
Is there anywhere to charge an electric car?
Yes, we have a 7kW charging point on site.
What is there to do if it rains?
The BBQ hut is covered and has a log burner, so barbecues happen in all weather — one family called a downpour the highlight of their stay. The games area, Churnet Valley Railway and the potteries museums at Stoke are all wet-weather options.
